Why do I need a BMFA Membership?

If you are learning to fly with one of our instructors you won’t need BMFA Membership to start with.  We can cover you on the instructor’s membership.  We’ll tell you when you need your own.  BMFA fees are reduced as the year progresses.

The primary reason is insurance the text below in blue is from the BMFA

The first and most important point to remember is that the primary function of the insurance is to protect the insured BMFA member (You) in the event of a claim being made against them following an incident.  If a model flyer were to be found responsible for an incident and carried no insurance, then they would be personally liable for any damages or costs awarded under the jurisdiction of a civil court and could stand to lose everything, this has happened.

If you have joined elsewhere proof will be required. Junior and Vulnerable Adult members must be accompanied at all times by a parent, guardian or another person with written authority for their supervision.

Learning to Fly

Taking off Pete gives words of wisdom to Martin

Martin is now an accomplished flyer and passed his ‘A’ test, his model collection is growing.

Model flying can be a very rewarding hobby but it is very important that you start the learning process with the correct model and even more importantly a good BMFA certified Instructor.  We pride ourselves on our safety standards. Unless you are determined to fly IC (nitro engines) we always recommend electric models for beginners.  Electric flight has come on so much now it’s the best way to go.  Less to go wrong and cleaner.  We still love our nitro planes! Typical Costs of a trainer  £100  – Trainer Plane

Transmitters vary from around £50 to £250.   We mostly fly Mode 1 Throttle/Aileron control on the right stick.
Battery Charger  £20-£25
Batteries 2200mAH 3S   £15  best to 2-3  Our club predominantly flies MODE 1, however, we do have MODE 2 and MODE 4 fliers.  On most modern Transmitters the mode setting can be easily changed over, but it is important to check.  If you wish to learn to fly MODE 2 then that’s OK we can accommodate that as well.
Before dashing off to the model shop or ordering online we recommend that you visit us at the flying field for some good friendly advice.

Don’t order that Spitfire just yet, get your wings first and then you can beat up the sky.  We will be happy to answer all your questions and be able to recommend suitable models and suppliers to get you started.

Look forward to seeing you.
